Welcome To City Homesteads!

Hello and welcome to my little corner of the internet! My name is Rachel and I have always had a passion for feeling connected with the natural world through homesteading and gardening. This has been easier said than done growing up in urban and suburban environments!

A few years ago I had a wonderful opportunity to work in an urban garden that included the cultivation of fruit, vegetables, herbs, ferments, and other homesteading practices.

All things must pass, and my time learning from friends while growing bountiful amounts of produce ended. I entered a graduate program and moved across the country from Chicago Illinois to Austin Texas in a mad dash for a new lifestyle. Suddenly, my outdoor garden space was reduced to a small patio and the limited space I had in my new apartment.

This transition sparked a new goal: I was determined to reclaim the joy of gardening and homesteading, no matter how much time, space, or financial resources I had.

Let's bring the joy of indoor homesteading to everyone, no matter their budget, space, or schedule size.

Each methodology on this site is a result of careful research and keeps the urban or indoor gardener’s journey in mind. As I learn and implement new techniques, I am able to better refine my reviews and provide high quality suggestions for your own homesteading journey.

The benefits of urban gardening and indoor homesteading are numerous. Benefits include improved air quality, practical skill sets, affordable and nutritious foods and beverages, fun projects to share with your community, and a sense of connectedness with the world.

According to the 2016 IKEA Life at Home Report, 60% of people worldwide grow vegetables or flowers indoors and this number is climbing by 6.8% each year. This is no surprise when we consider the immense value that this small investment results in.

I look forward to joining you on this journey of mindfulness and growth! Let’s create a homestead revolution that provides access to the bountifulness of nature no matter where we are!
